Cinema as a Tool for Education, Cairo, Egypt

Andrew Erskine, our lead consultant, is in Cairo to deliver a programme of workshops at the event 'Cinema as a Tool for Education'. This event is organised by Misr International Films, The Arab League, MEDIMAGES, Anna Lidnh Foundation and The British Council.

Andrew will share our theoretical and practical knowledge on film education and simulate alternative teaching methods through the use of Cinema. By discussing international approached to film education, Andrew will explore notions of best and next practice with Egyptian colleagues.

This is also a moment for us to reflect on our work in this field. Over the last few years, we have been at the forefront of research and evaluation in film education - such as via our evaluations for FILMCLUB, First Light and Film London, plus in our development work for the new FILMNATION organisation in the UK.

Tom Fleming Curates and Facilitates the Nigerian Creative Expo, 2013 - Lagos, Nigeria

Building on the success of the 2012 Creative Expo, Tom Fleming is back in Lagos to co-lead the Nigerian Creative Expo of 2013. This is the British Council's major policy and partnership summit for the creative economy, bringing together the leading players from across the Nigerian creative economy, plus a sharp cohort of UK experts.

This year the event majors on the issue of 'capacity': i.e. how to develop the skills, confidence and overall capacity for Nigeria to more effectively support the potential of its vast population of creative talent. This includes a focus on creative education, creative skills, industry partnership, and management and entrepreneurialism.

With the support of the British Council and Enterprise Creative, Tom has led on crafting the programme, recruiting UK speakers and developing the strategic narrative for the event. He will also facilitate the event, including a set of Q&As with government ministers.

This is part of our expanding programme of activities across Africa - where we are also currently active in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
